Job Steps

One wheel at a time. Complete both sides before driving.

    Prepare and secure the vehicle

    Park on a flat, level surface. Engage the parking brake. Chock the rear wheels. Loosen the front lug nuts (150 lb·ft) before jacking — do not loosen on a free-spinning wheel. Jack up one front corner using the factory jack point (frame behind the front wheel). Place a rated jack stand under the frame. Remove the wheel.

    Inspect before you remove anything

    Visually check the rotor for deep grooves, heat cracks, or hard spots. Check the caliper for fluid leaks at the piston or banjo bolt. Check the brake line / flex hose for cracks. If the caliper is leaking, you need a rebuild or replacement — this guide stops here for that scenario.

    Remove the caliper

    Locate the two guide pin bolts (hex / Allen head) on the back of the caliper body. Remove both. Slide the caliper off the rotor — do not let it hang by the brake line. Use a wire or bungee to support it from the coil spring or upper control arm. Do not disconnect the brake line.

    Remove the caliper anchor plate (bracket)

    The anchor plate is held by two M16 bolts torqued to 184 lb·ft. These are extremely tight — use a breaker bar. Remove both bolts and slide the anchor plate off. Inspect the slide pin bores and rubber boots for damage; replace the hardware kit if boots are cracked or pins are corroded.

    Remove the old pads and rotor

    The old brake pads slide out of the anchor plate. Note their orientation. Remove the rotor — it may require a firm strike with a rubber mallet on the face if corrosion has bonded it to the hub. Use brake cleaner to clean the hub face thoroughly. Use a wire brush to remove rust from the hub contact surface before installing the new rotor.

    Compress the caliper piston

    Before the new (thicker) pads will fit, the caliper piston must be pushed back in. First, remove about a third of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir under the hood (use a turkey baster) — compressing the piston pushes fluid back up and can overflow. Then use a C-clamp or dedicated piston tool to slowly compress the piston flush with the caliper body. The front caliper piston pushes straight in — no rotation is required. (Rear integrated parking-brake calipers are different and require a special wind-back tool; front calipers are push-only.)

    Install new rotor

    Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove the protective coating (important — it will smoke and smell if left on). Slide the rotor onto the hub. The lug holes should align. If the rotor came with a retaining clip, remove it after the lug nuts are snugged — it's a shipping clip, not a functional part.

    Install new pads and hardware

    Apply brake lubricant (not grease) to the anchor plate contact areas (ears) where the pad tabs ride — never on the pad friction surface or rotor. Install the new hardware kit (pins and clips) if replacing. Slide the new pads into the anchor bracket with the friction surface facing the rotor. Apply any included anti-squeal shims per the pad manufacturer's instructions.

    Reinstall anchor plate and caliper

    Reinstall the anchor plate. Apply a small amount of threadlocker (medium strength) to the anchor plate bolt threads if the old bolts showed corrosion. Torque anchor plate bolts to 184 lb·ft. Slide the caliper over the pads and onto the anchor plate. Install the guide pin bolts: tighten the lower pin bolt first to 27 lb·ft, then the upper to 26 lb·ft.

    Reinstall wheel and torque lug nuts

    Reinstall the wheel. Hand-tighten all six lug nuts. Lower the vehicle to the ground. With weight on the vehicle, torque lug nuts to 150 lb·ft (203 Nm) using the Ford 6-lug tightening sequence: 1 → 3 → 5 → 4 → 6 → 2 (starting from any lug, number clockwise, follow the skip pattern). Do not use an impact gun to final-torque — use a calibrated torque wrench.

    Bleed the brake (if needed) and bed-in pads

    If you let air into the system, bleed the caliper at the bleeder screw (torque to 177 lb·in / 20 Nm when closing — verify wrench size against your caliper before purchase). Top off the master cylinder reservoir to the MAX line. Before driving, pump the brake pedal several times until it feels firm — the first pump will go to the floor as pads contact the new rotor. Check the pedal is firm before moving the vehicle.

    Pad bed-in: Drive at low speed (25 mph), apply moderate braking to near-stop (not a full stop), allow 30 seconds to cool. Repeat 6–8 times. This deposits an even pad transfer layer on the rotor and prevents brake shimmy.

    Repeat on the other front wheel

    Always do brakes in axle pairs. Repeat steps 2–11 for the opposite front wheel. Doing one side only creates unequal braking force and brake pull.
